Week 8 Headlines

  • Hustle dominate at G-League Showcase
  • Tyler Harvey earns 1st Team honors at G-League Showcase

Game 19 Breakdown

Key Stats

  • Dusty Hannahs- 26 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals
  • Tyler Harvey- 24 points, 8 assists
  • Yuta Watanabe- 22 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists
  • Tarik Phillip- 15 points, 5 assists, 2 steals

The Hustle were able to go undefeated at the G-League showcase by defeating the Wisconsin Herd in the second game of the showcase. The Herd, who have been pretty bad all season, had extra help with Donte DiVincenzo sent down for assignment by the Bucks. DiVincenzo dropped 21 points, and Bucks two-way players Christian Wood (35 points, 18 rebounds) and Jaylen Morris (20 points, 5 rebounds) led the Herd offensively, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the well balanced effort by the Hustle. Every Hustle player scored, other than Marcus Keene who played only 2 minutes.

MVP of the Week - Dusty Hannahs

With only one game this week, MVP honors were tough to hand out since both Dusty and Tyler Harvey had excellent games. I’m going to stick with Dusty though, as his improved all around game has changed the way the Hustle offense flows this season. Dusty continues to grow seemingly every game he plays and it’s paid dividends for the Hustle.

Hustle Stats

112.6: The Hustle lead the G-League in offensive rating after the G-League showcase with a rating of 112.6. The Hustle also have the 11th best defensive rating in the league. I’m usually not a big advanced stats guy, but anytime you can rank in the top 10 in both offensive and defensive rating, that has to be pretty good. Brad Jones has this team clicking on both ends of the court.

42.1: The Hustle are one of the deepest teams in the G-League. It’s pretty easy to tell, because they’ve played well in the absence of their call up guys, but the numbers don’t lie either. Led by Dusty Hannahs, the Hustle bench drops 42 points per game which is top 5 in the G-League. The depth by the Hustle has been a key factor in their early season success.

Week 8 Grade - A

Pretty easy to grade a team when they only play one game. The Herd aren’t a good team, but with extra help in DiVincenzo and Morris they were a tougher than expected matchup. Nonetheless, the Hustle were ready for the challenge, even with Ivan Rabb being a quick and unexpected scratch from the showcase. The Hustle have been ready for nearly every challenge thrown at them this season.

Week 9 Preview

Memphis Hustle @ South Bay Lakers (9-11) 12/27 9 PM CT

Memphis Hustle @ Stockton Kings (9-7) 12/29 9 PM CT

Stockton Kings (9-7) @ Memphis Hustle 01/03 7 PM CT

The Hustle will stay out west following the G-League Showcase with a visit to face off against the South Bay Lakers later this evening. The Hustle fell to the Lakers in the first matchup of the season 96-94 as Isaac Bongo and Memphian Johnathan Williams both scored 20 points. The Hustle were led by Markel Crawford and Dusty Hannahs, but Yuta Watanabe and Jevon Carter had poor shooting nights which led to the loss. The game plan from the first matchup worked for Brad Jones’ team, they just need to make their shots this time around in California.

The Hustle will stay in California and face off against the Stockton Kings before returning back to Southaven to tip off against the Kings again in back to back games. The Kings have played only 16 games so far this season, whereas most other teams have played 19 or 20. The Kings are mostly a one man show, with Kalin Lucas being their only consistently available player averaging more than 15 points. Lucas averages 22 points per game on the season, but if the Hustle can contain him they should be able to win both games against the Kings.

Here’s some super in depth analysis for the game against the Kings in Southaven: If the Hustle win in Cali, they just need to do the same thing. If they lose, they need to be better at basketball. If only basketball were that simple.

With the back to back games, and the fact I myself will be traveling back from California after the New Year, the Hustle Report will post Friday of next week instead of the usual Thursday spot. Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays and that everyone has a safe and fun New Years!

See you next week, Memphis.
