Week 17 Storylines
Game 41 Breakdown
- Marquis Teague- 24 points, 9 assists, 5 rebounds
- Jeremy Morgan- 19 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks
- Omari Johnson- 19 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocks
- Austin Nichols- 17 points, 8 rebounds
- Dusty Hannahs- 14 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals
The Hustle won a thrilling contest against the Reno Bighorns to avoid a season sweep against the Kings G-League affiliate. Both teams were shorthanded as the Bighorns were without David Stockton, Aaron Harrison & Luis Montero while the Hustle were without Kobi Simmons and Myke Henry. It was an up and down game that saw 20 lead changes and 16 ties. You can check my full recap to the game here.
Game 42 Breakdown
- Omari Johnson- 29 points, 10 rebounds
- Marquis Teague- 28 points, 10 assists, 3 rebounds
- Chance Comanche- 17 points, 8 rebounds
- Jeremy Morgan- 13 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists
The Hustle fell to the South Bay Lakers despite leading by 13 points after the first quarter. The Hustle were outscored 41-21 in the second quarter and were never able to recover and make the game close again. Marquis Teague lead the Hustle on his birthday with solid contributions from both Omari Johnson and Chance Comanche but it ultimately wasn’t enough to defeat the Lakers. The Lakers were lead by Alex Caruso and Scott Machado who both scored 20+ points. The Lakers are one of the best teams in the G-League, but the loss is still a bit disappointing considering the solid first quarter.
MVP of the Week - Marquis Teague
Marquis Teague’s excellent play this week stops Omari Johnson’s 3 week MVP stretch. Teague has been the most consistent player for the Hustle this season and was excellent this past week, averaging nearly a double double with 26 points and 9.5 assists a game. Teague is the clear cut leader for this team, and he performed as a leader should this past week.
Numbers to Know
16.3: The Hustle have managed to only average 16.3 free throw attempts per game in the month of February despite averaging more than 20 any other month of the season. Part of this is due to the Hustle’s reliance on the 3-ball (averaging 32 attempts a game in February) but also shows the Hustle just haven’t gotten calls this month. In both Hustle games I’ve covered in February, the officiating was definitely suspect.
20.3: Omari Johnson has been in the zone the entire month of February. Playing in all 9 games, Omari has averaged over 20 points per game, while also grabbing 7 rebounds as well. February has been his best month as a member of the Hustle so far and Coach Cyprien will surely hope the offensive success carries over into March.
41: Marquis Teague has played in 41 of the 42 Hustle games this season, with the lone missed game being due to suspension. I’ve written before how Teague has been the perfect veteran leader for this team, and his durability has been a huge part of that. In the G-League where players are constantly called up & down from their NBA affiliates, the Hustle are lucky to have a consistent guard in Marquis Teague.
Week 17 Grade - B
The Hustle were able to defeat the shorthanded Bighorns in a thrilling game. They followed that performance up with a great first quarter against the Lakers, but the 2nd quarter on from that game was a bit disappointing. Coach Cyp has to be pleased with how the week went though, since the Hustle defeated a good team, despite their missing players, and was competitive for a bit against the Lakers.
Week 18 Preview
Memphis Hustle @ Northern Arizona Suns (20-21) 3/2 8 PM CT
Memphis Hustle @ Santa Cruz Warriors (20-20) 3/4 8 PM CT
Game 43 Preview: The Hustle continue their California road trip with a matchup against the Suns, who defeated the Hustle in the final seconds last week. The Suns are the third highest scoring team in the G-League with plenty of border-line NBA talent. Danuel House and Archie Goodwin torched the Hustle last week, with Xavier Silas and Alec Peters contributing as well. It was another game where the Hustle had to make a comeback to make things interesting in the end. If the Hustle defense can keep it close for all four quarters, the Hustle have a shot at defeating the Suns on the road.
Game 44 Preview: The Hustle wrap up their road trip with a visit to face off against the Santa Cruz Warriors, who the Hustle defeated in their first matchup of the season. The Warriors lead the G-League in assists per game, which is how they are able to compete without a bonafide star player on their team. The Hustle defense will need to be patient and stick to their man and avoid the extra pass leading to easy shots for the Warriors. The Warriors are a mediocre rebounding team, while the Hustle are a top 5, so if the Hustle can out rebound the Warriors and limit them to one shot per possession, the Hustle should be able to pull out the win.
