One of the main surprises of the season was just how good Tyreke Evans was.

Tyreke Evans 2017-2018 Season

Tyreke Evans bet on himself this last offseason, signing a one year deal with the Memphis Grizzlies for right at $3 million. He spent previous seasons with New Orleans and Sacramento struggling to stay on the court and health was a huge issue for Evans coming into this season. He was supposed to be the wing coming off the bench that could get buckets for the Grizzlies and starting off the season he was well on his way to being the sixth man of the year but injuries to other players quickly changed that.

He went from coming off the bench and leading the second unit in scoring to becoming the full time starter and the main scorer for the Grizzlies much of the year. He only played 52 games for the Memphis Grizzlies this year, but that was more about the Grizzlies getting him rest and spending the last few weeks away from the team for an undisclosed reason and less about him being injured.

The Best

Tyreke Evans had career numbers this year regardless of his role for the Grizzlies. He had the most points since his rookie year, had a huge jump in assists and improved his three point percentage vastly. While he had a better three point percentage last year, he took almost two more threes per game this year for the Grizzlies. Evans was one of the players that was regularly in the positive of his plus/minus and he was looked to be the primary scorer in most of the games.

The question this year for Tyreke Evans was always if he could stay healthy for the entire season and he did that and more this year playing on a one year deal in Memphis. He was one of the best playmakers the Grizzlies have ever had on the wing and he could consistently get buckets whenever he wanted.

The Worst

Tyreke Evans biggest strength was being able to create his own shot, get to the rim, and get points whenever he wanted. That was what he was supposed to be at the start of the season and it would have fit perfectly in the plan with Mike Conley leading the first unit. Unfortunately the season went off the rails pretty early on and that strength became the worst thing on a nightly basis. Tyreke Evans won the Grizzlies 2-3 more games than they would have won without him, by himself. This had nothing to do with Tyreke Evans and everything to do with the Grizzlies situation.

Tyreke Evans also should have been traded. He played some of the best basketball he has ever played and several teams wanted him at the trade deadline. The Grizzlies decided they did not want to make a trade and elected to keep him to everyone’s dismay. The worst things about Tyreke Evans this year had nothing to do with Tyreke Evans.

Ways to Improve

Tyreke Evans will be a free agent this summer, but he did everything right this year. He played the role he was supposed to play, and he should have improved his situation. Tyreke Evans should go out and get paid with a nice multi-year contract.

Overall Grade

Tyreke Evans defintely earned a impressive grade this year. He went from questionable healthy role player in the offseason to starting two guard and scoring just about every point it felt like some nights for the Grizzlies. There were a lot of times that he did not pass the ball to the open (Chandler Parsons) player, but a lot of times there weren’t any good players on the court with him.

He was one of the most consistent players this year for the Grizzlies and hopefully they can find some way to bring him back next season. His scoring off the bench and being able to score in any situation would be invaluable for this team in the playoffs. Hopefully we can see the role he was supposed to play this year, next year.
