A reach at 3?

The 2018 GBB Community Mock NBA Draft is under way! The draft is continuing through our Twitter account @sbngrizzlies if you want to follow it there as it develops. We are recapping picks here at GBB from now until draft week, and we have arrived at #3 overall with the Atlanta Hawks and their mock GM Ross Jarrar (@asaprockytop).

First, a review of where we are in the draft.

  1. Phoenix Suns - Deandre Ayton, center, University of Arizona
  2. Boston Celtics (via Sacramento Kings) - Luka Doncic, guard/forward, Real Madrid

So with the top two going as expected, will Marvin Bagley III follow suit and head to the ATL?

With the 3rd pick of the 2018 GBB Community Mock NBA Draft, the Atlanta Hawks select Jaren Jackson Jr., forward/center, Michigan State University.

A bit of a surprise here, but Jackson’s potential is clear and he perhaps fits the Hawks better than Bagley would. Here is Ross with his explanation of the pick-

The Hawks have needs all over the roster, so I went with the most upside here. Marvin Bagley is quite polished offensively and plays his butt off, but I’m betting on the potential of Jaren Jackson Jr. He can be THE transcendent shot-blocker in a draft class stacked with bigs, including Mo Bamba who has a 7’10” wingspan. Not to mention JJJ has a jump shot with potential.

I’m not expecting JJJ to be Kevin Garnett from the get-go, and being on a listless team like Atlanta will give him room and time to grow while they build a foundation.

The Memphis Grizzlies, and their GM Joe Mullinax (me), are on the clock. Marvin Bagley is on the board still. A home run for the bears of Beale Street, right?

Maybe not. Stay tuned.
