Grizzlies lose big to the Bucks, 111-101

Grizzlies lose 10 of their last 11 games

NBA: Milwaukee Bucks at Memphis Grizzlies Justin Ford-USA TODAY Sports

The Memphis Grizzlies had an embarrassing loss over the weekend to the Houston Rockets where they let James Harden score 57 points and were never really in the game in the second half. They came back home for one game against the Milwaukee Bucks before playing a back to back this weekend. They are 1-8 in their last nine games and were looking to get back on the right side of things against a really good Milwaukee Bucks team.

The Grizzlies started off struggling right away and settling for some low percentage shots, mid range, and contested three pointers. They started off the game going 1-7 from the field in the first few minutes and Giannis Antetokounmpo scored a quick 5 points to give the Bucks a early 6 point lead. As the first quarter wore on it didn’t get much better for the home team as they shot just 21% from the field and 16% from three through most of the first quarter. The bench lineup for the Grizzlies was able to do some things and get this Grizzlies team back in the game. JaMychal Green had a huge poster dunk, block, and made three sequence to bring some life back into the FedEx Forum. Omri Casspi and JaMychal Green were the Grizzlies leading scorers at the end of the first with 7 points each as the Bucks led by 8 points.

The bench unit for the Grizzlies got them back into the game, pulling within two points of the Bucks and really giving this team some life and energy within the building with the fans. The starters rotated back in and Mike Conley was able to keep it going pulling within 2 points again after the Bucks had made a few baskets. This team fought much harder than they have in recent games, they competed and were able to stay with the Bucks only being down by 5 points at halftime.

Grizzlies started the third with much more energy than the first quarter and were able to slow down the Bucks a little and keep the game competitive. They were even able to draw Giannis into four fouls very early in the third quarter. Marc Gasol got into the game in the third quarter as well hitting a huge three to give the Grizzlies a one point lead. It was short-lived however, as the Bucks came right back to regain the lead with a pair of Eric Bledsoe free throws. The Bucks were able to go on a 16-0 run to put the lead back to 15 points lead within just about three minutes. As hard as the Grizzlies had worked to get back in the game, they gave up the lead just as easily. The game quickly got even more out of hand after that, with the Grizzlies all but giving up at the end of the third quarter, leading to a huge lead for the Bucks at 18 points before the fourth quarter even started.

Once the fourth quarter started the game was pretty much already over. The Grizzlies were down by as much 29 points early in the fourth quarter. This game would serve as their 10th loss in 11 games.

Quick Notes

  • JaMychal Green is still a fantastic backup big for the Grizzlies off the bench and he finally put someone on a poster tonight.
  • Grizzlies played hard the first half, the competed with toughness, but as soon as the Bucks put a run on them in the third quarter, they collapsed.
  • The Bucks scored 41 in the third quarter alone, almost as much as the Grizzlies scored in the entire first half.
