- Jarnell Stokes- 20 points, 4 rebounds
- Tyler Harvey- 19 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals
- Tarik Phillip- 15 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals
The Hustle were able to jump out to a 1-0 season series lead against the Clippers with a nail-biter down in Southaven. The big man duo of Ivan Rabb and Jarnell Stokes combined for nearly 50 points in a game that saw a combined 128 points in the paint. The Hustle big men were able to slow down Angel Delgado just enough for the Hustle to sneak away with the win. The Clippers were without their leading scorer for the season, Johnathan Motley, who recently had his two-way contract converted to a NBA contract.
Game 26 Breakdown
- Tyler Harvey- 28 points, 8 assists (8/12 from 3)
- Jarnell Stokes- 20 points, 12 rebounds
- Tarik Phillip- 14 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals
- Dusty Hannahs- 14 points, 4 rebounds
The Hustle were able to clinch the season series against the Texas Legends after another dominant home effort. Tyler Harvey tied the Hustle record for 3’s in a game, while Jarnell Stokes showed off his double-double ability. Former Grizzly Wade Baldwin went off for 24 points in the Legends loss while former Hustle player Trahson Burrell was limited to just 6 points in 17 minutes of action. Tarik Phillip continued his great all around performance of the past few weeks and Dusty Hannahs got back on track after a handful of quiet games. The Hustle also hosted their second Hustle & Hounds game, this time with puppy themed jerseys. The jerseys, while great in theory, turned out looking pretty ruff.
Game 27 Breakdown
- Yuta Watanabe- 24 points, 9 rebounds
- Ivan Rabb- 19 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks
- Markel Crawford- 17 points, 3 rebounds
- Tyler Harvey- 16 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists
The Hustle dropped the last game of their 4 game home-stand against the South Bay Lakers. You can check out my full recap of the game here.
MVP of the Week - Tyler Harvey
Tyler Harvey had another big week for the Hustle, averaging 21 points last week thanks in large part to his 28 point outburst Saturday night. Harvey has really stepped up big time for the Hustle with his role increase after the Hustle lost Brandon Goodwin to the Nuggets.
8: Tyler Harvey tied the Hustle record for 3’s in a game with 8 on Saturday night. Almost as important how efficiently he shot the 3 ball that night. Harvey shot 75% going 8/12 from beyond the arc, so he wasn’t just chucking up 3’s.
20: Jarnell Stokes averaged 20 points and 8 rebounds in his two game stint with the Hustle. Stokes dominated in his return to the Grizzlies organization, even if it was just for a brief weekend.
Week 11 Grade - B
The Hustle had a solid 2-1 week, but I’m grading them a bit harder than I usually do. The loss to the Lakers was uncharacteristic and not the way you want to finish off a home-stand before hitting the road for 4 games. The Lakers are a talented team, but that game should have been won by the Hustle.
Week 12 Preview
Memphis Hustle @ Rio Grande Valley Vipers (16-10) 01/18 7 PM CT
Memphis Hustle @ Delaware Blue Coats (10-13) 01/23 6 PM CT
The Hustle will kick off a 4 game road trip with a trip to face off against the Vipers. The season series is currently split 1-1 with both teams winning on their home court. The Vipers will be stacked, as they’ll be getting back Danuel House Jr., who had been starting for the Houston Rockets on a two-way deal, but could not come to terms on an NBA contract before his 45 days were up.
The Hustle will then make a rare road trip East to face off against a struggling Delaware Blue Coats team. The outcome of this game will likely depend on if the Blue Coats have Shake Milton available to him. Milton averages nearly 25 points per game but has only appeared in 12 games so far, as he splits his time with the Blue Coats and Philadelphia 76ers. If Milton plays, the Blue Coats are a much more difficult team to beat.
The waiving of Jarnell Stokes sucks for nearly all the parties involved. I don’t think it was in the Grizzlies organization’s plans to cut Stokes after just two weeks, but losing Dillon Brooks and Kyle Anderson to injury, as well as the Chandler Parsons drama has left the Grizzlies short on the wing. Stokes simply became the victim of an unfortunate circumstance with the Grizzlies.
