A day after the Memphis Grizzlies publicly announced through Adrian Wojnarowski that they would be taking offers for Marc Gasol and Mike Conley, they still had to come down to the FedEx Forum to take on the Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets came into the forum winning 3 of their last 4 games and on the edge of the eastern conference playoff race. It was still crucial the Grizzlies win a few more games to get out of danger of keeping their first round pick this year instead of giving it to the Boston Celtics.
The Grizzlies and the Hornets both started out slow, combining for just two made baskets well into four minutes into the game, the Grizzlies, however were able to come up with a few steals and turn those into points forcing the Hornets to call a timeout and taking a very early four point lead. The Grizzlies continued to play aggressive and push the lead well into the first quarter. Marc Gasol had 7 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists mid way through the quarter and the Grizzlies held Kemba Walker to only 5 points as well. They would not be able to hold the Charlotte Hornets at the bay the entire quarter as they took a one point lead late in the first quarter on a Tony Parker basket.
The Hornets went on a run to start the second quarter to push the lead to 6 points with all of their starters sitting on the bench. The game for the Grizzlies would not get any better through the second quarter as the Hornets pushed the lead to 14 points and the Grizzlies really struggled to score the basketball. They didn’t give up though, behind Marc Gasol and Jaren Jackson Jr. they were able to cut the lead down to just 5 points mid way through the second, but were able to utilize Mike Gasol and Mike Conley down the stretch to close the gap to four points at halftime.
After the half, the Grizzlies did not score a single point in the first three minutes of the game and allowed the Hornets to creep out to another 9 point lead. The Hornets tried to put the game away but Marc Gasol stayed aggressive grabbing a double double in the third quarter. That didn’t last long as the Grizzlies reverted back to their old third quarters and pushed the lead to double digits, to give them credit they tried to fight back and were able to get the lead down to just 13 points late in the third quarter. By the end of the quarter they had cut it back to ten points behind Marc Gasol who had 19 points, 14 rebounds, 8 assists, and 2 steals through three quarters.
The fourth quarter was largely a back and forth from both teams for the first four minutes or so with the lead staying right at ten points for the first part of the quarter. Near the end of the quarter, Kemba Walker remembered he was really good at basketball, and decided to take over for the Hornets pushing the lead back to 13 after a three pointer. The Grizzlies could never really get back in the game even after righting through the third quarter, their defense just wasn’t enough, losing by double digits to the Charlotte Hornets.
- It was weird being in the building know the Grizzlies are actively shopping Marc Gasol and Mike Conley. Im not sure how I will feel when they are no longer in the intro video.
- Marc Gasol had himself a night. Its been a while since we have seen him play like that, but it was nice to see him go off.
