Memphis Hustle 97 (17-13) @ Westchester Knicks 108

Memphis Hustle 98 (17-14) @ Maine Red Claws 99

Santa Cruz Warriors 110 @ Memphis Hustle 91 (17-15)

Week 13 Headlines

  • Dusty Hannahs becomes franchise scoring leader

Game 30 Breakdown

Key Stats

  • Yuta Watanabe- 23 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks
  • Dusty Hannahs- 21 points
  • Doral Moore- 12 points, 2 rebounds, 4 blocks
  • Tyler Harvey- 11 points

The Hustle got slaughtered by the Westchester Knicks as their eastern road trip continued. Although the final score showed an 11 point loss for the Hustle, they were down by 27 points midway through the 4th. Yuta Watanabe and Dusty Hannahs showed out offensively for the Hustle but didn’t get much help elsewhere. Billy Garrett and Kadeem Allen both dropped 20 points a piece for the Knicks. Just a sad effort by the Hustle last week.

Game 31 Breakdown

Key Stats

  • Tyler Harvey- 22 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals
  • Yuta Watanabe- 13 points, 7 rebounds
  • Tarik Phillip- 12 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists
  • Marcus Keene- 10 points, 4 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 steals

The Hustle followed their loss against the Knicks with a backbreaker against the Maine Red Claws. After being up 26 points in the second half, the Red Claws came back in the final minutes to steal the victory away from the Hustle. The Red Claws have not been good for most of the season, but got extra firepower in R.J. Hunter and Robert Williams last week. Still, giving up a 26 point lead is embarrassing and shouldn’t be accepted by Brad Jones. Once again the Hustle’s offense stalled out and the lack of a true bucket getter has shown over the last couple of games.

Game 32 Breakdown

Key Stats

  • Yuta Watanabe- 18 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals
  • Kyle Casey- 14 points, 9 rebounds
  • Tarik Phillip- 10 points, 6 assists
  • Markel Crawford- 10 points, 2 blocks

The Hustle returned home for a 10:30 AM tipoff against the Santa Cruz Warriors for their 2nd annual Financial Literacy game. I’m not sure if it was the early start, jet lag from the East coast road trip, or a multitude of things but the Hustle flat out didn’t show up to play. The Warriors jumped out to an early lead and didn’t look back, led by Kendrick Nunn’s 30 points. Former Grizzly Deyonta Davis only chipped in 8 points and 9 rebounds so at least they stopped him from having a revenge game. It was a disappointing effort to wrap up a disappointing week for the Hustle.

Hustle Stats

2: Before this 3 game losing streak, the Hustle failed to score over 100 points in 2 games so far this season. The Hustle failed to score 100 points in all 3 losses last week and are a not surprising 0-5 when they don’t score over 100 points.

4: Doral Moore, the Hustle’s starting center when Ivan Rabb is with the Grizzlies, averaged just 4 rebounds per game over the past week. It’s hard to win games when your starting center is grabbing rebounds like a shooting guard. There should never be games where 5’11” Marcus Keene outrebounds the 7’1” Moore.

MVP of the Week - None

Yuta Watanabe played decent enough to be considered for MVP honors but the team played so poorly this past week that no one really deserves the honor.

Week 13 Grade - F

I’ve been pretty generous to the Hustle with my grades so far this season, but this past week has to be the lowest point of the season for the team. Traveling is tough for G-League teams, but it’s no excuse to get blown out or give up big leads. The Warriors are a good team, and a 10:30 AM tipoff isn’t ideal, but getting blown out at the Financial Literacy game isn’t a good look for the team.

The Hustle offense seems to have forgotten how to score and Brad Jones will need to figure out how to get the team out of their recent slump.

Week 14 Preview

NBA: Orlando Magic at Milwaukee Bucks Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Memphis Hustle @ Iowa Wolves (9-23) 02/02 7 PM CT

Agua Caliente Clippers (15-14) @ Memphis Hustle 02/04 7 PM CT

The Hustle have a chance to get back on track as they face off against a bad Iowa Wolves team. The win won’t come easy though, as the Wolves have 4 players who average over 15 points per game. The Wolves also won the previous matchup in Iowa in early December. If the Hustle can’t figure out their offense woes, beating the Wolves will be a much more difficult task.

The Hustle will return home after their one game road trip to face off against the Clippers. The Hustle won a thrilling 119-116 game against the Clippers back on January 11th, but will need to slow down the high scoring tandem of Angel Delgado and Jamel Artis who combined for 48 points last matchup. The Hustle hold a slight lead over the Clippers in the Western conference standings, so this matchup will be big for both teams.
