Where to begin with this one. Anthony Davis hit the Grizzlies for 40 points and 20 rebounds on just 7-of-17 shooting, as Davis went 26-of-27 from the charity stripe, including 18 attempts in the third quarter. The Grizzlies turned the ball over 21 times in the game as the Lakers clamped down on defense in the second and third quarters.
The Lakers started out slow while the Grizzlies made five of their first eight shots to take a quick 15-2 lead with 9:16 to go in the first. The ensuing Lakers timeout was just what they needed as Memphis fell apart in the four minutes that followed, and Los Angeles went on a 11-2 run of their own to make it 17-13. Anthony Davis had a strong first quarter with 16 points, eight of which came from the charity stripe to make it 32-27 Memphis at the end of one.
Jaren Jackson Jr. found himself in more foul trouble and would end up on the bench early in the second quarter after picking up his third foul. Several Grizzlies turnovers would lead to Los Angeles taking their first lead, a 43-41 advantage with 4:30 to go in the half. Neither team really could pull away from there, but a last-second Davis put-back gave the Lakers a 49-47 lead.
Davis had 20 points in the first half to lead all scorers while Grayson Allen had nine for Memphis. Davis was the only player in double figures in the first half, while Jonas Valanciunas trended towards another double-double with six points and seven boards.
Midway into the third quarter, Los Angeles had taken a 66-65 lead when JaVale McGee dragged Valanciunas down on a shot attempt and was given a Flagrant-1. From there, a potential flagrant review on a Dwight Howard offensive foul, a defensive three seconds call, and more common fouls brought the game to a crawl. However, before all of that, Memphis led the game 65-59 with 7:02 left in the quarter. The Lakers would then go on a 29-2 run to close the quarter and lead 88-67. Davis shot 18 free throws in the third quarter as part of 20 points in the quarter.
That quarter was enough to do the Grizzlies in as it was more of the same in the fourth. The Lakers kept the pedal to the floor and sent the Grizzlies to their biggest loss of the season thus far.
Jonas Valanciunas got his double-double with 14 points and 11 boards, while Ja Morant chipped in 16 points. LeBron James narrowly missed a double-double for LA with 23 points and eight assists.
The Grizzlies will look to bounce back this Saturday, November 2nd, as the Phoenix Suns come into FedExForum with tip scheduled for 7:00pm.
