Agua Caliente Clippers 112 @ Memphis Hustle 114 (18-16)
Week 14 Headlines
- Tyler Harvey sets multiple records in game against Wolves
Game 33 Breakdown
- Tyler Harvey- 58 points, 4 rebounds (12/16 from 3)
- Tarik Phillip- 18 points, 9 rebounds, 10 assists, 3 steals
- Dusty Hannahs- 16 points, 4 rebounds
- Kyle Casey- 14 points, 6 rebounds
The Hustle lost a heartbreaking game against the lowly Iowa Wolves this week, despite Tyler Harvey having a career game. Neither team could get a stop in the overtime period, with the Wolves ultimately coming out on top. It was disappointing the Hustle couldn’t take advantage of Harvey’s career night, but the Wolves had two players score over 30 points to balance out Harvey’s point production.
Game 34 Breakdown
- Tyler Harvey- 27 points, 6 assists, 3 steals
- Kyle Casey- 17 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals
- Doral Moore- 17 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks
- Tarik Phillip- 13 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 steals
The Hustle were able to snap a 4 game losing streak by defeating the Agua Caliente Clippers at home on Monday. The win clinched the season series against the Clippers, as well as put the Hustle back in sole possession of 6th place in the Western Conference standings. You can check out my full recap here.
58: Tyler Harvey’s 58 points was the season high in the G-League this season and 3rd highest in G-League history. Harvey has been a bucket getter for the Hustle for the majority of this season, and the game against the Wolves further upped his value as he looks for a 10 day contract.
12: Harvey’s 12 3-pointers in the Wolves game was also good for 2nd most in G-League history. That one game put Harvey’s name in the G-League record books at least for the foreseeable future.
MVP of the Week - Tyler Harvey
Harvey averaged 42.5 points per game this week as the Hustle went 1-1. It’s still weird they lost his monster 58 point game, but the Hustle seem to go as Harvey goes. When he plays like he did this past week, the Hustle will win more often than not. I would not be surprised if Harvey gets a 10-day contract with the Grizzlies or another team after the trade deadline.
Week 14 Grade - B
The Hustle lost against a pretty bad Wolves team, but made up for it by beating a good Clippers team in a big time matchup. The Wolves had the benefit of having a couple of two-way players available for the game, while the Hustle were without their NBA guys. Brad Jones was able to get the offense out of a slump and help snap the losing streak. Not the worst week for the Hustle heading into the final stretch of games of the season.
Week 15 Preview
Northern Arizona Suns (7-30) @ Memphis Hustle 02/08 7 PM CT
Memphis Hustle @ Texas Legends (13-23) 02/09 7:30 PM CT
Iowa Wolves (12-23) @ Memphis Hustle 02/13 7 PM CT
The Hustle will look to extend their winning streak to 2 games when they face off against the team with the worst record in the G-League, the NA Suns. The Suns don’t have any standout player but Jawun Evans, George King and Peter Jok all have the ability to take over a game if given the chance. The Hustle should win this game, but with their up and down play lately it’s no guarantee.
The Hustle will have to travel after their game against the Suns to face off against the Texas Legends. The Legends have been a tough matchup for the Hustle, despite the Hustle going 2-0 in the first two matchups of the season. Kostas Antetekounmpo will be a matchup problem for the Hustle with their lack of size without Ivan Rabb in the fold. Dusty Hannahs’ former teammate Daryl Macon is also a tough matchup.
The Hustle will then return home to face off against the same Iowa Wolves team that they just lost too. The Hustle will need to shore things up on defense and not rely on Tyler Harvey to replicate his 58 point performance.
The Hustle have a good opportunity to solidify their playoff chances as all 3 matchups are against the bottom 3 teams in the Western Conference. A 3-0 week isn’t out of the realm of possibility and anything less than 2-1 would be considered a bad week. The one caveat would be if the Hustle’s roster is impacted in some way by the NBA trade deadline, but with the Hustle playing most of their recent games without guys like Ivan Rabb and Jevon Carter, they should be just fine.
