The tiebreaker has spoken. The Memphis Grizzlies will be slotted at #8 overall in the 2019 NBA Lottery.
The Memphis Grizzlies made some pretty drastic changes to the organization on Thursday, reassigning Chris Wallace and John Hollinger, promoting Jason Wexler and Zachary Kleiman, and firing Head Coach J.B. Bickerstaff. As the Grizzlies decide which direction they want to go in as an organization moving forward, today’s tiebreaker plays a gigantic role in that process. The stated goal, before the franchise restructuring, was to convey their first round pick this year to Boston. Whoever the newest executive in the front office eventually is, and whoever the new head coach will be, the first step in to the future of the Grizzlies will come with the Lottery on Tuesday, May 14th.
The race to convey has ended. Come May 14th we will know for sure whether the Grizzlies will be making their own selection in the 2019 NBA Draft, or whether the Celtics will have the 9th overall pick come draft day. The future of Mike Conley and other Grizzlies will likely be tied to those results in some way or another. The Grizzlies will need one team to jump ahead of them to convey their pick to the Celtics now...so it will be a nerve racking Lottery night for the Grizzlies.
Buckle up, Memphis. This off-season is going to be a heck of a ride.
