Zion Williamson in Beale Stree Blue would’ve been cool...but Ja Morant or RJ Barrett will be a solid consolation prize.
While the Grizzlies failed to convey their 2019 1st round pick to the Boston Celtics and the pick is now top-6 protected in 2020, Memphis can at least rejoice in knowing a very, very good prospect will soon be with the organization alongside fellow new franchise cornerstone Jaren Jackson Jr. The Memphis Grizzlies have “won” the 2019 NBA Draft Lottery, jumping six spots to #2 overall in the NBA Draft despite only a 6.3% probability of this outcome occurring for the Grizzlies.
The last time Memphis picked #2, it went...not so well (Hasheem Thabeet instead of James Harden, Tyreke Evans, or Stephen Curry). But this is a new day, and a new era of Grizzlies basketball. The new-look front office will almost certainly get a chance to pick their preference between Murray State’s Morant and Duke’s RJ Barrett - two players that have various strengths to their games and tons of potential. They are not the superstar-caliber players that Williamson is, but they do have star power...and that should help reinvigorate a fan base that needed some good news.
Celebrate, Memphis. As long as the Grizzlies don’t mess this up - like try to trade the rights to the pick for another band-aid type of veteran player - this pick should be worth being excited about as another building block back to postseason relevance.
Stick with GBB all off-season long!
