One day after the Memphis Grizzlies say goodbye to their greatest chapter in their history, they will welcome their future.
Jonathan Givony of ESPN is confirming what he reported almost a month ago and what many always thought was the right way to go once Memphis secured the #2 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft Lottery - Ja Morant is about to be a Grizzly.
This was never really in doubt, as we reported the day after the NBA Draft lottery, but Ja Morant will be wearing wearing a Memphis Grizzlies hat around 740pm EST tomorrow. Wouldn't surprise me if Memphis adds shooting at 23 now. Cam Johnson, Keldon Johnson, Ty Jerome few options— Jonathan Givony (@DraftExpress) June 19, 2019
Ja Morant will be bringing his elite passing and explosive athleticism to town to grow alongside Jaren Jackson Jr. This time last year Memphis fans were contemplating younger talent like Jaren or Marvin Bagley Jr.’s fit alongside Marc Gasol and Mike Conley, the old guard of Grizzlies basketball.
How much difference a year can make.
Memphis is now fully engaged in a rebuild, with newfound cap space and a roster ready to be overturned to take on bad contracts in exchange for draft compensation. The mindset of this new front office is beginning to come clear - the future is now, and the process has begun.
Morant will be given the reins of the organization, alongside Jaren Jackson Jr. What comes next will be anybody’s best guess. The Grizzlies will also be picking at #23 (through the Utah Jazz) in the aftermath of the Conley deal - so things may just be starting to heat up as a busy summer gets under way.
