The Athletics's Shams Charania has reported that Memphis Grizzlies star young forward has been added to Team USA’s Select Team for FIBA World Cup training camp.

This is a big opportunity for Jaren Jackson Jr. as he continues his development in the league. He will get to train and compete at a high level playing against other NBA players all summer long. Plus, this is huge recognition on the national stage by being selected to this team.

The Select Team is a separate squad than the National Team itself, however, these young players will accompany the National Team in their training camp for this year’s FIBA World Cup. Jackson will be with other young promising NBA players who eventually may have a chance to make the National Team down the road.

From an article from USA Basketball, Jerry Colangelo described the Select Team as such, “The purpose of the Select Team is to help prepare our National Team for the World Cup and to offer an opportunity for some younger NBA standouts to be involved in the USA Basketball National Team program. These 13 players help extend the legacy of elite players who have been part of USA Basketball Select teams. Not only will this group help prepare the United States for the FIBA World Cup, but it will also provide them with valuable experience at the USA Basketball National Team level.”

In addition to the playing experience received, the Select Team will be coached by former head coach, Jeff Van Gundy. He and, Gonzaga coach, Mark Few will lead the team in all training and competition throughout the summer. The training for the Select Team will lead up to a friendly exhibition combined with the National Team on August 9th from Las Vegas. That will be a showcase of the country’s talent who will be featured in the FIBA World Cup.

The process will be an invaluable experience for Jaren Jackson Jr.
