Before they ended their current road trip in Washington D.C. this evening, the Memphis Grizzlies wasted little time in officially parting ways with newly acquired guard Dion Waiters. As was reported shortly after trading for Waiters in the Andre Iguodala/Justise Winslow trade this past Thursday at the NBA Trade Deadline, Memphis quickly decided it was better to move forward without Waiters on their roster.
Theoretically, Waiters’ skill set would have been a welcome addition to the Grizzlies’ roster for the stretch run this year and next year. However, off the court issues have resulted in Waiters playing just three games this year. Though he has been healthy for much of the season, continued issues off the court led to the Miami Heat suspending him three different times, including a bizarre plane trip incident earlier this season.
As the Grizzlies have shown with Josh Jackson and Andre Iguodala, the Memphis front office has placed just as much of a priority on creating a positive culture off the court for their young roster as they have on developing their talents on the court. This focus has likely contributed to Memphis’s surprising success so far this season.
As a result of waiving Waiters, there could be further roster transactions in the near future. Stick with us here at GBB for the latest transaction and news as it becomes official.
