Bad debts have to be paid off at some point, right?
For the Memphis Grizzlies, we have experienced two sides of it.
The Jeff Green trade is a move the Grizzlies are paying for today. Luckily, it’ll likely transpire into a pick between 12 and 17, depending on what the NBA does about the rest of the season for non-playoff teams. So, they dodged a bullet and avoid the possibility of Jalen Green or Cade Cunningham becoming a Boston Celtic.
Meanwhile, a shrewd trade for a 35-year old Otis Thorpe — for half a season — cost the Grizzlies a chance at - Chris Bosh...Dwyane Wade...Carmelo Anthony...and...(cries)...LeBron James.
This week’s podcasts of Revisionist Grizztory break down both sides of these debts.
Core 4: Revisionist Grizztory - How the Grizzlies Were a Pick Away From LeBron
92.9 ESPN’s Connor Dunning joined me here to talk about the moment in franchise history that could’ve changed Memphis basketball — the 2003 draft lottery. The Grizzlies were a pick away from LeBron James, so we breakdown what it would’ve been like for Memphis to grow as an NBA city with LeBron. We also cover how it would’ve affect Pau Gasol’s legacy in Memphis, what happens after LeBron leaves (be real with yourselves here), and who they would’ve picked if the Otis Thorpe trade never happened.
Core 4: Revisionist Grizztory - If Jeff Green Was the Answer and Why He Wasn’t
You could already guess who I had here...
...did you guess GBB Site Manager Joe Mullinax?
You guessed correctly. Joe and I talked about the Jeff Green trade, and why it was the right move at the time. In addition, we answer why it didn’t work, and how the Grizzlies managed to save themselves with that move with a steal of a deal...and how they messed that one up.
