The Memphis Grizzlies entered Wednesday night’s matchup against the Charlotte Hornets riding a four game losing streak (tied for the longest in the NBA). With a very talented Hornets team entering FedExForum, could the Grizzlies end their losing streak before heading out west?

First Quarter:

In the first quarter, the Grizzlies continued to struggle defensively. For every good offensive possession that the Grizzlies had, the Hornets had double that. The Grizzlies over-helped defensively, and Jonas Valanciunas was picked apart in the pick and roll offense that the Hornets were running.

Thankfully for the Grizzlies, Grayson Allen came in off the bench and knocked down four three’s out of his five attempts in the first. The Grizzlies turned the ball over five times to the Hornets one, but trailed 38-34 after one quarter.

Second Quarter:

The Grizzlies as a team had a better defensive second quarter. Tyus Jones continued to be aggressive on offense orchestrating the Grizzlies offense while drilling three 3 pointers for Memphis. The Grizzlies would outscore the Hornets 36-30 in the second quarter, Valanciunas would be better defensively, and he would help the Grizzlies offensively in the second quarter as well. Grayson Allen led the Grizzlies with 16 points in the first half as the Grizzlies led the Hornets 70-68 at the half at FedExForum.

Third Quarter:

Kyle Anderson, three-point specialist?! Anderson got the Grizzlies offense rolling early in the third quarter drilling three corner threes. His hot hand forced the Hornets to set up their offense in the half-court as the Grizzlies used their offense to play solid defense. The Hornets thrive in transition, and the Grizzlies forced the Hornets to take the ball out of the basket, which slowed the Hornets pace.

The Grizzlies held the Hornets to 15 third quarter points as their overall confidence on the defensive end forced the Hornets into tough shots. The Grizzlies also rebounded the ball really well through three quarters. Memphis out rebounded Charlotte 40-29. The Grizzlies led the Hornets 101-83 heading to the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter:

Despite the Hornets trying to throw a full-court press at the Grizzlies down 20, Memphis stayed composed and broke the press. The Grizzlies held their double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter. The Grizzlies would break their franchise record for three-pointers made in a game (21) with 23 three pointers. The Grizzlies would take down the Hornets 130-114 to break their four game losing streak.

Final Stats:

Kyle Anderson: 27 points, 10/14 FG, 6/8 3pt

Grayson Allen: 18 points, 5-12 3pt

Ja Morant: 15 points, 11 assists

Dillon Brooks: 20 points, 4 assists, 8-13 FG

The Grizzlies hit the road as they start their two-game West Coast road trip on Friday night against LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center.
