Grizz Gaming is going to have to “GRND HRDR.”

Grizz Gaming General Manager and Head Coach Lang Whitaker faced the media for the first time Monday since 2K League Draft a little over a month ago. “A lot of credit to Vandi, and Mey (Authentic African) for dedicating themselves to Pro-Am this offseason,” Whitaker discussed when opening Media Day. Their offseason franchise Bright Lights dominated the Pro-Am scene in Next Generation tournaments and the two stars got better.

Grizz Gaming tips off their 2021 season with the NBA 2K League “Tip-Off Tournament” that is powered by AT&T tonight. The Grizzlies will be in Group play which will feature Hawks Talon GC, and Raptors Uprising GC. The team with the best record in the group will advance to the next stage in the Tip-Off Tournament.

This isn’t necessarily going to be easy for Grizz Gaming as they will take on two really solid teams. Raptors Uprising GC whom went undefeated last regular season and dominated every tournament last season will have the same five guys. Along with a revamped Hawks Talon GC roster that is young, these games can be dangerous.

The Grizz are looking to make an early name for themselves before the regular season begins next week. “Our chemistry is already there, I feel like it gives us a leg up,” Grizz Gaming Power Forward Spartan discussed his first month in the 901. “Nobody has an ego, and we are getting better everyday,” Whitaker echoed Spartan’s quote about the chemistry.

Chemistry, and consistency will have to be there for the Grizz as they tip-off with a back-to-back matchup against the Hawks at 7:00 P.M. CT. Then, conclude their group play against Raptors Uprising back-to-back at 9:00 P.M. CT. What do you need to know heading into tonight?

Consistency is key:

Grizz Gaming has struggled in their three seasons with consistency, and it seems like that could change this season. It will have to if this team has playoff asperations, and team captains Vandi and Authentic African were very consistent this offseason. They will need to carry that offseason success, and skill set into the Tip-Off Tournament as this sets the tone for the first half of the season.

Chess 2K, whom the Grizz drafted in the first round will play a huge roll as they Grizzlies will have to get going early from deep. Chess, who is a natural Point Guard turned sharpshooter, knows how Point Guard Vandi likes to hit his shooters, so that will be exciting to see it finally come to fruition.

FollowTheGod, whom the Grizzlies snagged in the second round of the 2K League draft will have his hands full on the defensive end of the floor with guarding KennyGotWork for Raptors Uprising GC, and then BP on Hawks Talon GC. Follow had a really good offseason, and played 29 games for Hawks Talon GC last season, so in a way, Follow has an advantage heading into tonight.

Lastly, the Grizzlies first round pick at Power Forward Spartan is this team’s third man next to Authentic and Vandi. A big man that can stretch the floor and handle business defensively, Spartan has a huge roll tonight. Drafted in the fourth round last season by Mavs GG, Spartan raised his stock this offseason, and was a top three power forward in this draft for a reason. A high basketball IQ, which is great for team chemistry, makes him ready to step up with Vandi and Authentic tonight.

Prediction:

Grizz Gaming will have to handle their business against the Hawks in their opening matchups. Win the winnable games, and if you can steal one against Toronto, that is all the better, but consistency get’s you 2-2 (or better tonight).

Grizz go 2-2 in their pool play.
