Vandi (Zach Vandivier) and Chess2K (Chess2K) sat in a Zoom media availability prior to Grizz Gaming’s two week four matchups. Myself, along with a handful of media sat around asking the Grizz backcourt what has been their key to the early success.

Then, at 5-1, coming off of a bye week, sitting atop the NBA 2K League, Vandi and Chess didn’t sound like two guys that were comfortable with their quick start. “It’s been a great start, sitting atop the Eastern Conference, but we have to be ready no matter the opponent,” Vandi told reporters. Referring to a handful of 2K League teams looking to bring the Grizz back to earth.

The message was also clear - this Grizz Gaming team hasn’t even scratched the surface yet. Also, confidence isn’t lacking with this Grizz team, as Chess2K wasn’t hesitant to say that he feels like he and Vandi are the best backcourt in the 2K League. This isn’t as hot of a take as you’d think.

It’s as if this Grizz Gaming squad is full of guys that have been doubted, and a franchise that has been doubted, for years. In a young league, Grizz Gaming has essentially completed their rebuild, and has arrived in time to contend for a 2K League Championship.

Throw the excuses out of the window, Grizz Gaming has arrived.

The week started with sweeping a very hungry Knicks Gaming squad in two games that weren’t pretty by any means. It’s in those games that you realize what you have from a roster standpoint. “Everyone can have a great offense, but what makes a team special, is having consistent defense,” Grizz Gaming Sixth Man JRod told me.

With their back-to-back wins against Knicks Gaming on Thursday night, and the fashion that both were won by, this team had arrived. When Friday came, for Grizz Gaming to shine under the bright lights, they didn’t disappoint.

Facing a very seasoned Blazer5 Gaming squad, and facing two former teammates in GOOFY757, and Lav - Grizz Gaming took care of business. Game one, Grizz Gaming led by 15 points at one point, and sprinted to a 66-61 victory. With a potential season sweep on the horizon, it wouldn’t be easy with a veteran team like Blazer5 Gaming squad.

Grizz Gaming would have to ramp up their tempo in game two, as they fell behind 5-0 off the tip. Following a timeout, Grizz Gaming went on a 23-8 run to close out the first quarter. From there, Vandi had control of each possession, and that is thanks in part to Chess2K, and Authentic moving well without the ball.

Chess moves really well off ball finding his spots, “dexing” his defenders, and finding fading shots that have a larger green window than most. For Authentic African, his IQ and patience at Center is so lethal. Offensively, Authentic getting the ball off the pick and roll can either score at the rim (which is hard on this 2K), or locate the next open shot to either Spartan or FollowTheGod.

Grizz Gaming took down Blazer5 in a sweep, moving to a league best 9-1 record in the young NBA 2K League season. Vandi is a candidate for Week Four Player of the Week for the NBA 2K League for averaging 27 ppg, and 10 assist in week four.

Of note, Authentic African sits 5th in the 2K League in FG Percentage (82.1), and number one in rebounding at 16.3 rebounds per game.

Grizz Gaming will be back in action on Friday as they take on the defending champion Wizards District Gaming, and 76ers GC on Saturday night in week five.
